KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian has called for an increase in the 2024 Budget allocation for public health to five per cent of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Dr Sim said that the current allocation for public health is insufficient, standing at only 2.59 per cent of the national GDP.

“Therefore, I hope that the allocation can be increased to five per cent of the national GDP, which is in line with the recommendations of the Health White Paper.

“This increase in necessary to prepare for an aging country. We do not expect the allocation to increase overnight in 2028 or 2029, but at least a gradual increase is needed,” he told reporters after officiating at the Youth Futsal and Palijo Futsal Competition at Kampung Sinar Budi Baru Futsal Field here today.

Dr Sim, who is also the Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government said that the plans to repair poor clinics and hospitals in Sarawak need to be put into action.

“We want to see tangible implementation on the ground, not just announcements.

“We want it to be done seriously. On behalf of the Sarawak Government, I am certain the Premier will help because it benefits the people of Sarawak and there is no reason for the Sarawak Government to delay,” he said.

Also present were Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim and National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) Sarawak Branch chairman Wynson Ong.
