KOTA SAMARAHAN: A long-time Hope Place volunteer raised concerns about the plight of a family of four living in poverty here, prompting the non-governmental organisation (NGO) to come forward to help.

Yeo Heng Siang, 45, works as a vegetable vendor with his wife, Trazy, 38.

The couple, who have two children, aged four and nine, grow and sell a variety of vegetables in a nearby village.

However, the lack of a vehicle has limited their sales and their income is uncertain. On a good day, sales only reach around RM40.

Their financial situation has worsened when Yeo has health problems.

He suffers from diabetes, gout and a spinal problem after falling from an excavator in 2019.

Since the incident, he has been unable to do construction or heavy work.

The family now rents a small room and lives in poverty.

According to Trazy, he once had to give his youngest child sweetened condensed milk because he could not afford baby formula.

Despite the challenges, Yeo and his wife are trying to find more stable jobs.

However, the lack of transportation as well as the burden of rent, medical bills and school supplies has made their efforts even more difficult.

Hope Place, or its full name Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching (PKHK), is now helping the family with basic food supplies.

Members of the public who wish to lend a helping hand to the family or those in similar situations can contact Hope Place at 082-505987 or 013-5672775.

Donations are most welcome and receipts will be provided upon request and these can be made directly to Maybank (MBB) bank account: 511289001160 or via their Facebook page to obtain the Sarawak Pay (S PAY GLOBAL) QR code.
