KUCHING: The Trading Card Game (TCG) Pokémon Card Competition has demonstrated that competitive gaming can help young people develop critical thinking, discipline and sportsmanship.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the event had successfully brought together young people, families and Pokémon enthusiasts, reflecting the inclusive nature of the annual Kuching Festival at the closing ceremony of the 2026 Kuching Festival Pokémon Battle Tournament held at the MBKS Lobby today (Aug 2).
He said the festival was more than just a food and entertainment event, as it also provided a platform for people with different interests to connect, interact and build friendships.
“Some people may think Pokémon is just a card game. But when you watch the competition, you will realise it is much more than that.
“Every player needs to think carefully, plan their strategy, stay focused and never give up.
“These are important life skills that will help you not only in games, but also in school, at work and in life,” he said.
Wee congratulated the organising committee, Star Studio Company, Isekai, sponsors, volunteers and everyone involved in making the competition a success.
He also commended all participants for their courage and determination, saying every contestant was a winner regardless of the final results.
“Whether you won a trophy today or not, you are already winners because you had the courage to compete, challenge yourself and learn from every match.
“Keep enjoying the game, keep improving and, most importantly, keep showing good sportsmanship,” he said.
Wee expressed hope that their victory would mark the beginning of many more achievements.
“I hope this is only the beginning of many more achievements. Continue to inspire others with your passion, discipline and positive attitude,” he said.
He also thanked members of the public for supporting the event and encouraged them to continue participating in future programmes organised by MBKS as part of the Kuching Festival.
At the competition, Brendan Wong Pak Ming emerged champion and took home RM1,500 in prize money. Danial Hariz Habiri finished as first runner-up, winning RM1,000, while Alex Chua Wne Xuan claimed second runner-up and received RM500.
Wee later officially declared the 2026 Kuching Festival Pokémon Battle Tournament successfully concluded.
