WARSAW, Poland: Poland holds its presidential election on Sunday to choose a successor to incumbent President, Andrzej Duda, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.
Twelve men and one woman are running to succeed Duda, who cannot run again after serving two five-year terms.
Warsaw Mayor, Rafał Trzaskowski, is leading in the polls.
The 53-year-old is running for the liberal-conservative Civic Coalition led by Prime Minister, Donald Tusk.
Trzaskowski, who has been mayor since 2018, achieved a strong result in the 2020 presidential election, narrowly losing to Duda in the run-off.
Duda’s right-wing Law and Justice party (PiS), the largest opposition party after losing power to Tusk’s coalition in 2023, is backing the 42-year-old historian and political outsider, Karol Nawrocki, who is polling in second place.
Sławomir Mentzen is running for the radical right-wing Confederation party, but has little chance of winning.
A run-off election between the two highest-placed candidates in two weeks is considered likely.
