KUCHING: A 33-year-old local man was arrested in Kampung Rampangi on Friday after police seized 14 packets of crystal-like substance suspected to be methamphetamine, worth an estimated RM572.
Kuching District police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the arrest was carried out at 3.15 pm by a team from Santubong Police Station and the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of Kuching District Police Headquarters.
“Preliminary urine tests found that the suspect tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
“Records also show that he has three previous convictions under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” he said in a statement yesterday (Nov 8).
Alexson said the case is being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a potential prison term of 2 to 5 years and 3 to 9 strokes of whipping upon conviction.
The suspect is currently remanded for four days until Nov 12 under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code to assist with the investigation.
Alexson added that the arrest was the result of continuous intelligence operations and public cooperation.
“The Royal Malaysian Police will not compromise with anyone involved in drug trafficking. Possession, distribution, or protection of drug activities is a serious offense under the law,” he said.
He added that the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division remains committed to combating drugs to protect present and future generations, reminding the public that drugs are the nation’s number one enemy.
