Police cracks down on illegal street racing in New Year operation

MIRI: Police mounted a major overnight crackdown on illegal street racing and dangerous riding in Miri, issuing 40 summonses and seizing 25 motorcycles during a joint operations ahead of the New Year.

The integrated operations, codenamed ‘Ops Samseng Jalanan’, was led by ASP Thien Woon Cheng of the Miri District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, together with officers from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Miri.

The operation began at 11:00 pm on December 31 and continued until 5:00 am on January 1, targeting known hotspots frequently used by youths to race motorcycles and perform hazardous stunts.

Areas covered included the Piasau residential area, Jalan Piasau, Jalan Pulau Melayu, Jalan Miri By Pass, and Jalan Marina.

A total 12 motorcycles were seized.

These locations have been repeatedly flagged for reckless riding, excessive speeding, and dangerous manoeuvres such as wheelies.

Police said the activity posed a serious risk to public safety, particularly during peak festive traffic ahead of the New Year.

During the operations, 40 summonses were issued for various traffic offences.

A total of 25 motorcycles were seized and taken to the Traffic Police Office at Miri District Police Headquarters for further action.

Of these, 12 motorcycles were detained under Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Police said enforcement efforts would continue, stressing that illegal street racing was not a harmless pastime but a threat that could lead to serious injuries or fatalities.

The police also took the opportunity to remind parents to closely monitor their children and ensure they do not ride motorcycles without valid licences or get involved in street racing activities.

Authorities warned that firm action would be taken against offenders, especially those who endanger themselves and other road users.
