MIRI: Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu has addressed concerns raised by Sarawak PAS Commissioner Jofri Jaraiee on the alleged proliferation of illegal slot machines in Miri.

In a statement responding to an article published by an English daily  on Feb 22, titled ‘Sarawak PAS worry about increasing presence of illegal slot machines in Miri, urges crackdown’, ACP Alexson clarified that no such machines have been detected in the district to date.

However, ACP Alexson acknowledged the discovery of premises facilitating online gambling through top-up (reload) services. Between January and February 2025, Miri police conducted 61 raids, resulting in multiple arrests and seizures under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

Additionally, 15 premises involved in gambling activities have had their electricity supply cut off by SESCO this year.

The police chief emphasised the commitment to intensify operations against gambling activities in the district.

He urged individuals with relevant information to come forward by visiting the nearest police station or contacting 085-433730.

ACP Alexson thanked  the community for its vigilance on the safety and environment of Miri district.

This response comes after Jofri Jaraiee expressed his worries about the rise in illegal gambling machines in Miri urged the authorities to shut down all involved illegal premises before the situation escalates.
