KUALA TERENGGANU: Two local men have been remanded for seven days starting today until Tuesday to assist investigations into the assault of a foreign national and damage to property at a grocery shop in Marang yesterday.
The remand order against the two suspects, both in their 20s, was issued by Magistrate Sharifah Amirda Shasha Amir Shariffuddin at the Kuala Terengganu Magistrate’s Court here.
In a statement today, Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said the incident, which occurred at 7.25 pm, stemmed from a misunderstanding between the victim and several locals in their 20s, resulting in injuries to the victim and damage to property.
“Swift action by members of the public together with the police successfully brought the situation under control. Following the incident, an investigation paper was opened under Sections 324 and 427 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon and committing mischief,” he said.
Mohd Khairi said the police view the case seriously and assured that investigations would be carried out transparently and fairly in accordance with the law.
He also advised the public not to speculate or spread unverified information, as it could affect the investigation.
“The police will not compromise with any individual or group that deliberately violates the law.
“Firm action in accordance with legal provisions will be taken against anyone found guilty without compromise, to ensure public safety and order in the state are safeguarded,” he said.
Earlier, a video went viral on social media showing a group of men arguing with a foreign national at a grocery shop, resulting in items in the shop being damaged and scattered. – BERNAMA
