MUKAH: Police seized 86 cartons of duty-not-paid beer and cigarettes in an integrated operation at Jalan Tiong Hua here on Monday.
A 52-year-old woman was also arrested following a raid on an unnumbered bird’s nest house around 2.30pm.
Mukah OCPD DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias, who confirmed the case, said police found three locked stores—two of them belonging to a 33-year-old man—being used as storage for gas tanks.
“However, the third store belonging to the man’s mother, was locked.
“We instructed the mother to unlock the store and found a total of 36 cartons of various beer and 50 cartons of cigarettes,” he said, adding that the total value of the seizure was RM13,485.84.
DSP Muhamad Rizal added that the mother admitted to owning the duty-not-paid goods.
She also failed to produce any documents from the Customs Department or licence to sell the items.
Both the suspect and goods were brought to the Mukah police headquarters for further investigation under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
