MIRI: Police here have seized seven modified motorcycles and issued 36 summonses for various traffic offences during an overnight operation targeting illegal street racing.

Police inspect one of the seized motorcycles.

The enforcement exercise, codenamed Operasi Samseng Jalanan, ran from 10:00 pm on August 16 until 4:00 am the following morning.

It was led by two senior officers and eight personnel from the Miri District Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division.

Checks were carried out across several hotspots including Jalan Bandaraya Miri, Jalan Marina, the Miri Bypass, Jalan Tanjung Lobang and Jalan Tudan.

District Police Chief, ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, said the operation was aimed at curbing dangerous road behaviour and ensuring motorists complied with traffic laws.

During the operation, he said 12 vehicles were inspected, with seven motorcycles seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987. “Officers found the bikes had been heavily modified from their original structure and detained them for further examination,” he said in a statement.

He added that 16 individuals were also stopped and questioned by the enforcement team.

“Such crackdowns will continue on a regular basis. Riders are also warned against reckless behaviour, unauthorised vehicle modifications and gathering in large groups on roadsides, which can cause congestion and noise disturbances.

“Careless driving and riding not only endangers yourself but also other road users,” he said, while urging motorcyclists to adopt a safer and more responsible attitude.

Police have also appealed to members of the public with information about street racing activities to contact the Miri police operations room on 085-433400.
