KUCHING: A political secretary to Sarawak Premier has filed a police report today (Jan 16) regarding the malicious editing of a local newspaper headline.
When met by reporters, Roseline Mapong said she received information about a fabricated news item that is circulating via WhatsApp.
It involved the manipulation of a news headline from Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas’ speech at the Majlis Amanat Perdana Premier 2025 on Jan 13.
“The original headline, ‘Uggah calls for unity in defending Sarawak’s rights,’ was altered to read, ‘Unity in defending Malaya over Sarawak’s rights.’
“In addition, the edited image also included the words ‘GPS ulun Malaya tetap’, which translates to being a slave to Malaya.
“This act is disrespectful to both the federal and Sarawak governments, demeaning and insulting the GPS government, and deliberately misleading the people of Sarawak.
“Such behaviour is immoral and can be described as very rude,” she said after filing the police report at Satok police station, accompanied by six other political secretaries.
Roseline added that the political secretaries to Sarawak Premier strongly oppose and condemn the act of deliberately manipulating, editing, and abusing social media to spread misinformation and negatively impact the public.
She pointed out that the statement is highly misleading and contains elements of slander, malicious intent, and a blatant disregard for the leadership and unwavering stance of Sarawak in defending its rights.
“We have never been, and never will be, a slave or ‘ulun’ to any party. The misuse of media to spread fake information is an offence and should not be tolerated.
“Such actions can cause undue anxiety, anger among the people, and even indirectly threaten the safety of our leaders,” she said.
Roseline stated that the persistence of such act will have detrimental consequences, and the dissemination of misinformation by irresponsible parties must be immediately halted.
