SIBU: Politicians should talk less and do more to create space for active listening and understanding, says Robert Lau Hui Yew.
The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan chairman said that public servants who consistently engage in grandiloquent speeches often leave little room for meaningful conversations with their constituents.
Hence, Lau urged all members to begin by embracing a more reserved approach to speech.
“Through this, they can dedicate more time to genuinely understanding the concerns, needs, and aspirations of the people they represent.
“This empathetic understanding forms the foundation upon which effective policies or plans of action could be formulated for the people’s benefit,” he said at a unity cruise with party members here on yesterday.

Citing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg as an example, Lau said that Abang Johari is well received by people from all walks of life as action speaks louder than words.
“Politicians who prioritise action over empty rhetorics tend to earn greater trust and credibility from their constituents.
“When politicians consistently follow through on their promises, their constituents develop a sense of respect and trust in their leadership.
“And we all know, this trust was essential for maintaining a stable and productive political environment, allowing for more collaborative efforts between politicians and citizens,” he said.
Therefore, Lau stressed that this is the path, which SUPP Bawang Assan members must choose.
“Politicians promising too much without delivering erodes public confidence and fosters cynicism.
“Such politicians litter the political landscape and while they may fool the people sometimes, they are unable to fool the people all of the time,” he said.
Conceding that effective communication was undeniably important in politics, Lau said the true mark of a successful politician lies in their ability to transform words into actions that benefit the people they represent.
“By speaking less and doing more, politicians can demonstrate their commitment to meaningful change, build trust and credibility, address urgent issues, and inspire citizens to participate in the betterment of society,” he stressed.
The unity cruise saw more than 100 SUPP members from Sibu’s five branches – Bawang Assan, Bukit Assek, Dudong, Nangka, and Pelawan – participating in the four-hour boat ride.
Also present was Bukit Assek Assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek representing party president Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
