ROME: Pope Francis visited Rome’s Regina Coeli prison on Thursday, continuing his Easter tradition despite recent health struggles.

The 88-year-old Pontiff, recovering from pneumonia, skipped the customary foot-washing ceremony on doctors’ advice but offered blessings to around 70 inmates and staff.

“I can’t do what Jesus did on Holy Thursday this year,” he said. “But I can be close to you.”

Francis, who was hospitalised for 38 days earlier this year, is expected to miss parts of the Vatican’s Easter celebrations.

It remains unclear whether he will deliver the traditional Urbi et Orbi blessing on Sunday.

Separately, United States Vice-President, JD Vance, is visiting Rome this weekend and may meet the Pope if health allows. – BERNAMA
