KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 12 out of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) formulated by the federal government have shown a positive outlook.
Deputy Minister of Economy Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib stated that among the SDGs with better achievements are SDG 1, SDG 5, and SDG 7, each showing encouraging percentages in their respective segments.
According to a news report by TVS, she mentioned that SDG 1, which involves reducing absolute poverty, is currently at a rate of 6.2 per cent.
“SDG 5, which concerns gender equality, has seen the enforcement of the 2022 Anti-Sexual Harassment Act and the operation of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Tribunal starting in March 2024.
“Meanwhile, SDG 7, which focuses on affordable and clean energy, has shown impressive performance, with electricity access at 99.7 per cent and the highest renewable energy usage at 19.7 per cent,” she said during the Dewan Rakyat session on Wednesday.
She was responding to a question from Tan Kok Wai (Pakatan Harapan-Cheras), who inquired about Malaysia’s progress in each of the 17 aspects of the United Nations (UN) SDGs and the challenges preventing the realisation of all the goals.
Hanifah added that the strong performance of SDG 7 was contributed by efforts such as hydro renewable energy production and the construction of Malaysia’s largest floating solar farm in Sarawak.
In the meantime, she informed that based on the latest analysis using 2022 data, the country’s SDG achievement target for 2030 is projected to be at 43 per cent.
“The next analysis will be conducted in 2026 using 2025 data,” she added.
