MIRI: A large-scale community clean-up operation is underway to clear debris and waste left in the aftermath of recent floods.
Eleven affected areas have been identified, with clean-up efforts already completed in Sungai Adong and Pujut Tanjung Batu.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Miri Division Disaster Management Committee and coordinated by Miri City Council, is calling for greater community participation.
State Minister of Transport cum Senadin assemblyman, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, who is coordinating the committee, has urged local residents, corporate organisations, and NGOs to join the “Miri Community Gotong Royong” clean-up drive.
“We appeal to corporate bodies, voluntary organisations, and particularly residents of the affected areas to take part in this collective effort,” he said.
The clean-up task force, led by the Miri Resident’s Office, has already seen strong support from corporate entities.
Lee expressed gratitude to Shin Yang Group Berhad for its active involvement in clearing waste at Sungai Adong, Pujut Tanjung Batu, and Desa Senadin.
“They have contributed three teleloggers, each accompanied by two to three dump trucks and teams of workers. This systematic approach allows resources to be efficiently mobilised across multiple sites,” he said.
Other companies, including Naim Holdings Berhad and Miri Housing, have also pledged to join the efforts in the coming days.
The task force has noted that the volume of flood debris is substantial and Lee said the goal is to restore normalcy within a week.
“Our target is to complete the clean-up in collaboration with Miri City Council so that residents can resume their daily lives as soon as possible. It is crucial to dispose of all waste properly—not only because it is unsightly, but also due to the public health risks it poses,” he added.
