LONDON, United Kingdom: Ange Postecoglou has hit back at Arsène Wenger’s criticism of UEFA rules, calling the former Arsenal boss’s comments “crazy”.
Wenger recently argued that Tottenham and Manchester United should not qualify for the Champions League by winning the Europa League due to their poor domestic form.
Spurs, currently 16th in the Premier League, could reach the Europa League final if they overcome Bodo/Glimt in the semi-final second leg, having won the first leg 3-1.
Despite their struggles, a Europa League triumph would secure Champions League qualification, a rule in place since 2014-15.
Wenger urged UEFA to reconsider the rule, but Postecoglou dismissed his remarks as biased and ill-timed.
“Spurs does crazy things to people,” he joked, suggesting that critics are quick to diminish the club.
The Australian coach emphasised that rules should be respected, questioning why Wenger has only raised the issue now.
He acknowledged the challenges of Tottenham’s season but insisted Europa League victory would justify Champions League entry.
Postecoglou concluded by saying he respects Wenger, but added, “It’s going to upset people, so that makes me happy.”- AFP
