SIBU: The annual Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) has potential to be developed into an international event, says Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The Deputy Premier said this could be achieved through collaborations with both federal and state tourism ministries.

“BCF, no doubt, is the most iconic event and main highlight of Sibu’s calendar of tourism events.

“Tourism is an essential economic sector as it is able to create various job opportunities and provide livelihoods for many millions more in both developing and developed economies,” he said when officiating the opening of BCF 2022 here, Tuesday evening (July 19).

“BCF is a cultural celebration aimed to foster respect and open-mindedness among different ethnic communities.

“This is an ideal platform to unite people from different communities.”

On another note, the Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government said his ministry hoped that Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) would embark on more community-centric initiatives in line with its vision towards becoming a liveable and sustainable city by 2031.
