SIBU: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has proposed the inclusion of the Sibu Power Boat Race in the Sarawak Tourism Calendar.
This is due to its potential to attract tourists from abroad.
“We have Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, the Deputy Minister (for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development), who can incorporate it into the events calendar.
“Simultaneously, we can draw in tourists and enhance Sibu’s appeal. Naturally, there are aspects that require enhancement to truly captivate international tourists,” he said when met by reporters after officiating at the water sports event at the Rejang Esplanade here on Sunday.
Fadillah, who is the Petra Jaya MP, pointed out that Sibu has been long known as the host of water sports events and renowned for regattas and power boat events.
He expressed his willingness to assist the association in elevating the sport to a national platform, with hopes of garnering international recognition for the Sibu Power Boat Race.
The Sibu Power Boat Race, jointly organised by the Sungai Merah Unity Association and Sibu Motor Sports Association, took place from Nov 2 to 5.
The event drew significant participation, with nearly 200 boats registered across eight categories, offering a total prize pool of RM48,250.
These categories encompassed 5hp open, 18hp long boat, 18hp tunnel boat, 30hp 2 cylinder tunnel boat, 30hp 3 cylinder tunnel boat, SST-45 formula light, 50hp tunnel boat, and SST-60 pro class tunnel boat.
