Power outage hits large parts of Kuching

KUCHING: Large parts of the city experienced a power outage tonight (Mar 11), with several areas affected since 8.30 pm.

According to Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) via its mobile app, SEB Cares, the unplanned outage impacted areas including Pine Square 4 and 5, The Glen, Kim Hin, and nearby locations.

SEB stated that the cause of the power interruption is still under investigation, adding that updates will be provided as progress is made.

Other areas impacted were Garden Resident, Batu Kawa New Bazaar, Batu Kawa Bridge, Rantau Panjang, Kampung Stapok 2, Batu Kawa Commercial, Moyan Mall, Scene Villas, Batu Kawa Old Bazaar, and surrounding areas.

The electric utility company confirmed that power supply has been partially restored for these areas, but efforts are ongoing to determine the cause of the outage.

Meanwhile, 3rd Mile Exchange, Kong Phin Road, and nearby locations were also affected, with power restoration expected by 11 pm. 

Further up in Siburan, areas such as Taman Duranda Emas, Taman Rice Field Batu 19 and nearby locations were also affected.

Earlier in the evening, heavy rain was reported across the city.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department issued a thunderstorm warning, stating that several parts of Sarawak were expected to experience thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds until 9 pm today.

The affected areas included Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit, and Bintulu.

A thunderstorm warning is issued when there are signs of storms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20 mm/hour that are either imminent or expected to last for over an hour. The alert is short-term and remains valid for no more than six hours per issuance.
