SIBU: The Sibu International Powerboat Race (SIPBR) 2025 is not merely a celebration of sportsmanship and technical prowess in high-powered water sports, said Sibu Resident, Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman.
He said the event symbolises the revival of the local economy and progressive tourism promotion efforts, and serves as a platform to foster unity and build people-to-people diplomacy through sports and camaraderie.
“With the presence of racers from various countries, we are placing Sibu on the world stage – not only as a race location, but as a tourist-friendly, dynamic destination rich in local values,” he said.

He said this in his speech at the welcoming high tea of the SIPBR 2025 programme at Li Hua Commercial Centre here on Thursday.
Meanwhile, speaking about the high tea, Abang Mohamad Porkan said the event, though casual in nature, holds great significance and marks the beginning of a vibrant and colourful experience throughout SIPBR 2025.
“I believe that participants and guests will have the opportunity to enjoy not only the refreshments provided but also the warmth and hospitality of the people of Sibu, who are well known for their friendliness and inclusivity.
“Sibu may seem small geographically, but the spirit and aspirations of its people are grand and far-reaching,” he added.
He said the Rajang River – the main setting for the race – is not merely a prestigious arena for water sports but also a symbol of strength, a source of life, and the beating heart of the Sibu community, deeply rooted along its banks for generations.
“I wish all racers the very best. Compete with sportsmanship, prioritise safety, respect your fellow participants, and cherish the beautiful friendships formed through this event.
“Let SIPBR 2025 be more than just a race; let it be a meaningful experience, one that will be etched as a fond memory in your personal history and a special moment in the hearts of the people of Sibu, who welcome you with immense pride and warmth,” he said.
