SEBUYAU: Residents of Samarahan Division must help protect public utility assets as the electrical supply upgrade project gets underway, to prevent vandalism and theft.
In making the call, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this is important because the components used in electrical projects are quite costly.
“During our electricity supply upgrade project, it involves copper cables. So, we are concerned about theft and such, because during our treated water supply project, vandalism also occurred.
“Therefore, we ask the villagers to cooperate in protecting the materials when this project is carried out, as it is also for the benefit of the people,” he said.
He said this at a press conference after officiating the Samarahan Division Electricity Supply Upgrading Project at Kampung Sampat, Sebangan Hall, here today.
He added that various campaigns have been carried out by the state government in combating the issue.
“Yes, we have campaigns, but still, some people insist on stealing. But we try to mitigate it. We encourage reporting, and we work with the police,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, said that challenges beyond control, including vandalism and theft activities, do occur, causing electricity supply disruptions.
“Thus, I appeal to everyone to fully cooperate by reporting directly to the police or relevant agencies if you notice any suspicious activities in your area.
“I also urge all parties, especially residents in the Samarahan Division, to give their full cooperation, particularly by granting access and permission to the agencies and contractors involved in this project, to ensure its successful implementation,” he said.
Julaihi, who is Sebuyau state assemblyman, also requested that the Sarawak Government consider a proposal to build a RM10-million sports arena – which is also a request from residents in the area.
“The design is ready. It is like a place for various sports activities, not only for Kampung Sampat but also nearby areas. Besides that, we also hope the government can consider building a new surau, as the existing surau is located on a narrow plot of land,” he said.
