KUCHING: Development in Belaga is expected to accelerate as Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has given his full commitment to speeding up the implementation of several strategic projects in the area involving energy infrastructure, housing, and public amenities.

Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Liwan Lagang, said that among the main projects that have received the “green light” is the extension of the electric grid from Belaga to Nanga Merit, covering a distance of 135 kilometres, which is expected to bring significant benefits to residents in the interior.

“Regarding the Government Aid Housing Scheme (SPBK), which the Premier also agreed should be implemented in Belaga, we will work with the Land and Survey Department to obtain further details.

“We have received very positive support from the Premier,” he said when met by reporters after paying a courtesy call on the Premier at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex here today.

The visit was also joined by more than 20 community leaders and village chiefs (KMKK) from the Belaga-Merit area to present development proposals and the needs of the people in their respective areas.

Liwan added that his ministry has also requested the acceleration of the Belaga Square project, which has been allocated RM20 million, in addition to inviting the Premier to officiate the Belaga Square and the Belaga District Mosque next year.

At the same time, he said Abang Johari has also agreed to increase the allocation for the construction of the Belaga Stadium by RM5 million, further strengthening sports development and youth activities in the district.
