KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has dedicated his recent Japanese state award – The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star – to the people of Sarawak, emphasising that the international recognition reflects the state’s collective achievements, not his alone.

Abang Johari, who received the prestigious award for Sarawak’s contributions to forest rehabilitation, renewable energy development and global energy solutions, said the honour underscores the perseverance and unity of Sarawakians.

“This honour belongs to the people of Sarawak. Without the perseverance and unity of our people, no foreign government would notice Sarawak, let alone honour us,” he said.

He said this in his ministerial winding up speech at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today.

He added that Sarawak’s growing reputation on the world stage is the result of long-term commitment to sustainable development and forward-looking economic strategies.

“In that same spirit, this government has chosen a path that may seem bold or unusual. These are not indulgences, but tools to safeguard Sarawak’s economic sovereignty in a rapidly changing world.

“The path we have chosen may appear bold and unusual, but God willing, it will safeguard Sarawak’s economic sovereignty and the future of our children and grandchildren,” he said.

He stressed that Sarawak’s progress – from green energy initiatives to international partnerships – positions the state as a potential rising star within ASEAN.
