KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has hinted that Sarawak civil servants could receive a two-month bonus, saying the state’s revenue performance for the first six months was “quite promising”.
He said the revenue figures would be disclosed during the State Budget, while stressing that it was still too early to make a formal announcement on the payment.
“The report that I received for six months is quite promising. So I cannot disclose the figures, except during the Budget,” he said when asked by reporters to elaborate on the two-month payment during a press conference after officiating the ‘Sarawakku Sayang’ (SKS) programme in Sarikei today (Aug 8).
He said he was nevertheless prepared to mention the two-month payment despite it being too early.
“I am bold enough to mention two months for the future, although it is still too early,” he said.
When asked about the latest revenue position, Abang Johari said the figure available to him up to June remained promising.
“What I can tell you is, the figure that I got up to June… promising. Promising only. As long as GPS is in charge,” he added.
In his opening speech at the SKS programme, Abang Johari said Sarawak’s revenue had doubled from about RM7 billion when he took over from the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem to RM14 billion in 2025.
He attributed the increase to the state government’s prudent financial management, saying the stronger revenue position had enabled Sarawak to fund development and provide various assistance to the people.
He also praised civil servants and other parties for working hard to contribute to the state’s development.
However, no formal announcement has been made on the two-month payment.
