TOKYO: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has arrived safely in Tokyo, Japan for a two-day official visit to participate in the Asia Hydrogen World Conference 2025.
Abang Johari and the Sarawak Government delegation landed at Narita International Airport, Tokyo, at 5:25 pm local time today.
Accompanying him are State Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni; and Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development), Datuk Seri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel.
They were welcomed upon arrival by Malaysia’s Ambassador to Japan, Datuk Shahril Effendi Abd Ghany; Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS), Datuk Ibrahim Baki; along with senior state government officials.
Tomorrow (Thursday), Abang Johari will deliver a keynote address titled ‘Sarawak’s Hydrogen Vision: Catalysing Green Growth for ASEAN and Beyond’ at the conference.
His keynote address will focus on the latest Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap, an integrated strategy for renewable energy development, public-private partnerships, and investment in hydrogen technologies – covering mobility solutions and future export potential.
Sarawak is now emerging as a leader in green hydrogen development in the ASEAN region, leveraging its hydropower resources, clear policy direction, and strategic international collaborations.
The Premier’s participation reflects growing recognition of Sarawak’s leadership role in shaping the future of clean energy in Asia.
He is also scheduled to join a panel discussion on harmonising hydrogen policy support across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.
He will be joined by Director-General of International Policy for Carbon Neutrality, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan Shinichi Kihara; Adviser for Ministry of Energy, Saudi Arabia, Osama Melebari; and Research Fellow at the Institute for Democratic Research, Society and New Technology, Taiwan, Dr Tsaiying Lu.
The Asia Hydrogen World Conference 2025 gathers global leaders in hydrogen to accelerate the transition to a clean hydrogen economy across Asia.
Later in the afternoon, the Premier will hold a meeting with representatives from Sumitomo.
He is expected to return to the state on Friday.
