KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg received two courtesy calls at his office in Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today.
The first visit involved the Ambassador of the Republic of Peru to Malaysia, Ricardo Estanislao Morote Canales.
During the first meeting, Ricardo discussed several initiatives, including collaboration between Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and leading universities in Peru in three main areas, namely biodiversity and rainforest conservation, green energy research as an alternative to fossil fuels, and addressing tropical diseases such as dengue.
Ricardo also proposed a cultural exhibition featuring Peru’s indigenous communities, which comprise over 93 ethnic groups, to promote cultural integration and traditional knowledge, including herbal medicine.

The second visit involved the Mexican Ambassador, Luis Javier Campuzano Pina, who highlighted potential collaborations in the energy, technology, digital, and e-commerce sectors.
He also emphasised the strong trade relations between Malaysia and Mexico, with trade value exceeding USD15 billion in 2022, making Mexico Malaysia’s largest trading partner in Latin America.
According to Luis, Sarawak is an economic star in Malaysia, making it crucial to establish partnerships and collaborations, particularly in e-commerce, digital, and energy technology sectors.
Luis stated that meetings with Abang Johari and other authorities in Sarawak are vital for strengthening the existing trade relations with Malaysia.
Among the key topics discussed during the meeting were collaborations in key areas, including renewable energy such as green and hydrogen energy, solar energy, technology industry, and education.
These two visits open new opportunities to strengthen Sarawak’s ties with Latin American countries in various strategic fields.
