KUCHING: Sarawak Energy, Malaysia’s largest renewable energy developer, remains steadfast in its commitment to sustainable hydropower development as the main pillar of energy generation in Sarawak.

This aligns with the state government’s efforts to provide reliable, affordable, and renewable energy.

In recognition of commitment, the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) has earned international recognition after being awarded the International Hydropower Association (IHA) Blue Planet Prize 2025 on Sept 9 in Paris, France during the International Forum on Pumped Storage Hydropower.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today (Oct 21) received the award from Sarawak Energy Group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi here.

Also present to witness the presentation were Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi and Deputy Minister of Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) Datuk Ibrahim Baki, who is also Sarawak Energy chairman.

The prestigious award is presented to hydropower projects that demonstrate outstanding sustainability performance based on independent assessment using the Hydropower Sustainability Standard (HSS).

Earlier, the Bakun (HEP) also earned the Silver Certification under HSS, which was announced during Sustainability & Renewable Energy Forum (SAREF) 4.0 in Kuching.

The certification followed an independent assessment by the Hydropower Sustainability Alliance, highlighting Bakun’s strengths in community engagement, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and governance.

With a generating capacity of 2,520MW, Bakun HEP is the largest hydropower facility in Southeast Asia recognised under the HSS, and remains a key contributor to Sarawak’s renewable energy portfolio alongside Murum HEP (944MW) and Batang Ai HEP (94MW).

Furthermore, since March 2024, Sarawak Energy has served as the first Global Patron from Southeast Asia of the World Energy Council, supporting international efforts in energy transition, innovation, and sustainability policy.
