KUCHING: Sarawak’s push to become a developed state by 2030 can take inspiration from China’s transformation into a global economic powerhouse, according to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He recalled his visits to Shenzhen and Beijing in the early 1990s, noting how the late Deng Xiaoping’s open-door policy had sparked rapid development in these cities.

Beijing, he said, was heavily polluted at the time but has since transformed into a modern, clean city.

“Shenzhen has developed tremendously, and Beijing too has changed from being backward in the early 1990s to a modern, sophisticated capital today. It shows us that if you dare to change, you can be successful,” he said at the 31st anniversary celebration of the Sarawak Foundry and Engineering Industries Association last night (Oct 4).

Abang Johari stressed that Sarawak must embrace innovation, invest in technology, and adapt to global economic shifts to keep industries relevant and ensure the state remains competitive.

He added that Sarawak’s emphasis on renewable energy, semiconductor development, and high-tech industries aligns with this drive, drawing inspiration from how China diversified and modernised its economy.

“China is now second only to the United States. That should inspire us to move forward with confidence and chart our own path to progress,” he said, adding that with the right mindset, Sarawak can replicate aspects of China’s success while preserving its unique identity and strengths.
