KUCHING: Sarawak-owned universities will offer courses leading to Bachelor of Engineering in Construction Management by 2026.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the programme, the first of its kind to be offered in Sarawak, will be available at Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) and Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak.
He said the initiative would support Sarawak’s commitment to transition toward a low-carbon construction industry.
“We have to explore new methods, particularly in terms of materials, such as using green materials and adopt construction practices that reduce carbon emissions.
“For example, the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) can help lower the industry’s carbon footprint.
“That’s why, starting next year, we will send eligible students to pursue this course under our free tertiary education programme,” he said.
He told the media this after officiating at the International Construction Week (ICW) Borneo 2025 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today (May 13).
Abang Johari commended the Works Ministry and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) for hosting the event in Sarawak.
He noted its importance in raising industry awareness, especially in the area of facility management (FM).
The Premier pointed out a concerning disparity, noting that out of more than 468 facility management contractors registered nationwide, only 17 are based in Sarawak.
“I urge our local contractors to upskill and register with CIDB as FM service providers to meet the growing demand.
“With this forum, we’re sharing vital information on facility management, because without proper equipment and planning, we cannot maintain our buildings effectively,” he added.
As such, Abang Johari welcomed CIDB’s plan to conduct a dedicated FM seminar and training session as a follow-up to ICW Borneo.
“It’s a timely move to build capacity in this important sector,” he said.
