KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg remained tight-lipped about the timing of the next Sarawak state election, saying it was still some time away.

“If the term has ended, then we have no choice but to hold it. There is still a long time to go,” he told reporters after officiating the opening of Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School Kuching here on Saturday (Jan 31).

Recently, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Secretary-General, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi mentioned that the state election is due to be held this year, in line with the five-year term limit of the current state assembly.

“We had the last election five years ago. Of course, it will definitely be this year, but as to which month, that’s the Premier’s (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) prerogative.

“I am not going to give you a hint,” he was quoted as saying on BFM’s The Breakfast Grille.

The last Sarawak state election was held on Dec 18, 2021, which saw GPS secure a landslide victory, winning 76 seats and a supermajority in the state legislature.
