MANCHESTER: Data has emerged as a critical resource in shaping the direction of Sarawak’s economy.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this development goes hand in hand with the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), which is reshaping the global landscape.
He pointed out that over the past decade, AI has overhauled the world’s economic structure, driven by advances in chip technology and increasingly sophisticated data storage capabilities.
“This transformation has now entered a new phase, as AI is no longer merely a supporting technology but has evolved into a key element in determining development strategies.
“Five years ago, we were only talking about AI, but today it has become very important. In the span of 10 years, AI has advanced to a higher level, and in the next five years, it will evolve into strategic intelligence,” he said.
He said this during a strategic discussion session with industry players, led by the Member of Parliament for Manchester Rusholme Afzal Khan at the British Muslim Heritage Centre on Monday (May 4).
Elaborating further, Abang Johari emphasised that data now serves as a new resource that not only supports economic growth but also forms the basis for implementing social responsibilities more effectively.
“Data will provide us with something new. It is a resource that enables us to move forward, whether in the economy or in social responsibility,” he said.
At the same time, Abang Johari stressed that technological development must be supported by a comprehensive ecosystem encompassing chips, data centres, and information management systems to ensure effective implementation.
“Sarawak will continue to strengthen its capacity in these areas through human capital development, including sending students abroad to build intellectual capabilities and intellectual property ownership,” he said.
The session also saw the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen strategic collaboration and explore new opportunities that could benefit the development of Sarawak and the global community at large.
Also present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, State Financial Secretary Datuk Seri Wan Lizozman Wan Omar, Deputy State Secretary (Planning and Economic Development) Datuk Seri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel as well as heads of departments and agencies.
