KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is set to attend the 20th edition of Pesta Babulang in Batu Danau, Limbang on June 28.
The festival will feature not only the annual buffalo race, but also new activities such as raft and small boat races, along with a cultural showcase.
Batu Danau assemblyman Datuk Paulus Palu Gumbang said the Premier confirmed his attendance following a courtesy call held earlier today (June 20).
“We briefed the Premier on the programme, which begins on June 27. He will attend on the second day,” he told reporters after the courtesy call at Wisma Bapa Malaysia.
Among the main highlights are the Ratu Babulang and Panglima Babulang contests, as well as the Pertandingan Gong Bisaya on opening night.
“We expect 14,000 visitors this year, including those from Brunei, Sabah, Labuan and expatriates working in Brunei,” said Paulus.
Pesta Babulang, organised annually by the Sarawak Bisaya Association (PBS), remains a platform to preserve and promote Bisaya heritage.
PBS advisor Datuk Antonio Kahti Galis said the festival includes performances, traditional food, and efforts to revive fading drum traditions.
“This year, we will also feature an expanded replica of a ‘sanang’, the multi-family Bisaya home, to showcase old interior decorations,” he said.
He added that a buffalo will be given away in a lucky draw as part of the festival’s three-day programme.
