KUCHING: The Batang Ai Hydroelectric Plant (HEP), Sarawak’s first hydroelectric project, achieves a significant milestone today as it celebrates its 40th anniversary with a three-day programme of events at the Batang Ai Operator Residence, Sri Aman.
The celebration will be graced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, highlighting the plant’s critical role in Sarawak’s renewable energy journey and its long-standing connection with the local community.
The official ceremony today features an exhibition tour, cultural performances and addresses by key leaders.
The highlight of the morning will be the officiating speech by the Premier, who will also lead the commemoration of the plant’s 40th anniversary.
Beyond the official ceremony, the anniversary celebration is designed as a community-centred event.
Over the three days, visitors can look forward to cultural showcases, talent competitions, and interactive programmes that reflect the facility’s role as a driver of socioeconomic and cultural development.
The first day of the event continues with community entertainment in the evening, including a karaoke competition, live performances, and lucky draws.
Day Two highlights Sarawak’s vibrant heritage with the ngepan contemporary and ngajat competitions, a public-speaking contest, and a special showcase of Batang Ai HEP’s 40-year journey. The evening culminates with more performances, cultural showcases and community engagements.
On the final day, attention shifts to the future, with the Visionary Youth Contest giving local students and young leaders a platform to share their ideas for sustainability and innovation.
The anniversary also pays tribute to the communities of Lubok Antu, whose partnership has been central to Batang Ai HEP’s success.
Since its commissioning, the plant has supported education, cultural preservation, and socio-economic growth, while its 120,000-hectare catchment area has become a vital biodiversity hub.
Commissioned in 1985, Batang Ai HEP laid the foundation for Sarawak’s modern energy system and marked the beginning of the state’s large-scale renewable journey.
