MARUDI: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is scheduled to officiate the Baram Regatta at the Marudi Waterfront on September 20.

According to a TVS news report, Marudi Assemblyman, Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil, said the highly anticipated water sports event, to be held from September 18 to 21, will feature a new category this year.

“Our regatta will be held from September 18 to 21 and will be officiated by the Premier on September 20, which falls on a Saturday,” he told reporters after meeting community leaders at the Marudi Service Centre here today.

Penguang expressed his gratitude to Abang Johari for his generosity in providing substantial funding to ensure the success of the second edition of the regatta.

“This time, we are increasing the first prize for the ‘Raja Baram’ category to RM20,000.

“We will also have the Unity Cup, Petra Cup, Premier’s Cup, and for the first time, a fibre boat paddling race and a fibre longboat race, each with its own category,” he said.

In addition to the competitions, the regatta will also feature a decorated boat parade and nightly stage performances.

Penguang also revealed plans to hold a ground-breaking ceremony for the Miri-Marudi Road during the regatta, subject to the Premier’s approval.
