BINTULU: Bintulu’s growth continues with plans to develop a small satellite township in Samalaju to support its expanding industrial and residential landscape.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the proposed satellite township is crucial in accommodating the growing demand for housing, infrastructure, and services in the area, which has undergone rapid transformation since the early days of the LNG industry.

“We need a small satellite township in Samalaju and under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).

“We will introduce an Autonomous Rail Transit (ART) system to connect Bintulu, Kidurong and Samalaju, enhancing mobility in line with our vision for 2030 and beyond.

“Hence, with development plans in place up to 2035 and incoming investments, Bintulu’s population is expected to grow, not only from the local community but also with the arrival of foreigners.

“This growing diversity underscores the need for an international school, which is why plans to establish one in Bintulu are already underway,” he said.

He said this in his speech when officiating the grand opening of TGV Cinemas, Imperial Hotel and Boulevard Shopping Mall at Imperial Hotel here today.

Reflecting on Bintulu’s transformation, he said that since the introduction of the LNG plant under the late Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakub and the continued leadership of the late Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, the town has grown far beyond Kidurong, with significant expansion into Samalaju through initiatives like RECODA and SCORE.

“Bintulu has expanded, not only in Kidurong but also into Samalaju.

“This rapid expansion created the need for comfortable accommodation, including international-standard hotels that can host conferences and accommodate visitors to Bintulu.

“As I walked into this hotel, it is second to none. It feels as though I’m entering a hotel in Singapore and in other words, the standard has risen, and we are now able to offer comfortable accommodation for guests visiting Bintulu,” he said.

Abang Johari added that Bintulu offers not only low-carbon industry potential but also basic infrastructure, properties, comfortable hotels and venues for conferences.

“Therefore, I would like to say thank you to Shin Yang Group of Companies for putting the money back into Bintulu.

“Congratulations, Group Executive Vice-Chairman and Group Managing Director of Shin Yang Group of Companies, Datuk James Ling Lu Kiong, for your bold decision to provide a new era in our tourism industry,” he said.

For the record, Imperial Hotel Bintulu was developed by Pantiasa Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Shin Yang, as part of an integrated development that also includes Boulevard Shopping Mall Bintulu and TGV Cinemas Bintulu.
