KUCHING: The Sarawak government has proposed greater exploration of synthetic timber as a greener construction option to curb carbon emissions.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said while traditional timber remains important, emerging materials such as synthetic timber offer a viable alternative for construction needs.
“Synthetic timber is a combination of timber, fibre and other chemical products. Although its (production) still emits some carbon, just like any construction industry country and public transportation.
“But the degree of production of carbon can be mitigated and reduced.”

Abang Johari said this when officiating the International Conference on Industrial Forest Plantation Research and Innovation (ICFPRI) 2025 here on Monday night (Nov 17).
He further said that modern scientific advancements, including artificial intelligence and new absorption technologies, make it possible to counterbalance carbon emissions.
“Carbon can still be absorbed through natural and scientific means. Against this background, I hope scientists and experts can continue finding new methods to increase oxygen release and enrich our forests.”
He said that tropical regions like Sarawak possess natural advantages such as abundant sunlight and water, making them ideal for rapid tree growth and forest enrichment efforts.
“We can be a source of solutions to global climate change.”
He also called on the Forest Department Sarawak to strengthen international research collaborations, emphasising the importance of shared knowledge in meeting global climate commitments.
“I hope the Forest Department can establish a research network with the world so that we can help each other fulfil the agenda under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and establish a sustainable future for the next generation.”
