MUKAH: The uniqueness and authenticity of the Kaul Serahang Kakan ceremony continue to symbolise the identity of the Melanau community here, underscoring the need for ongoing commitment to preserve the tradition from being eroded by modernisation.
Mukah MP Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib said that while various improvements are being planned to enhance the organisation of the Kaul festival, traditional elements and customs remain the core of its implementation.
“Priority is given to tradition to ensure that inherited cultural values are not diminished, and that every element of Melanau culture continues to be preserved and not lost to time,” she said after attending the Kaul Serahang Kakan ceremony at Tapak Kaul Tugek on Saturday (April 25).
On a related matter, Hanifah, who is also Deputy Health Minister, said that any proposed development or infrastructure upgrades at the Tapak Kaul Tugek area would be carried out carefully and prudently.
“A cautious and measured approach is important to ensure that development efforts do not create financial strain or affect the sustainability of the area.
“We will take into account current factors, including geopolitical conditions and operational costs, before implementing any development plans,” she added.
Meanwhile, she also noted that developments in the aviation sector are expected to have a positive impact on the state’s tourism industry.
She said the proposed use of sustainable aviation fuel in the future could support more sustainable flight services while improving accessibility, particularly for domestic routes.
“Air services such as AirBorneo are expected to expand long-haul routes and improve access to Mukah,” she added.
