SIBU: Sarawak continues to maintain its reputation as one of the most peaceful states in Malaysia, thanks to the continuous commitment of the security forces and close cooperation between communities from various walks of life.

Sarawak Police Commissioner, Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah, said the peace enjoyed today is an important foundation for social stability and smooth development of the state.

He said this when speaking at the Handover Ceremony of the Sibu District Police Chief today, which saw the official handover of duties to the new District Police Chief, ACP Nazari Miskun, replacing ACP Zulkifli Suhaili who had held the position for almost four years.

Also present at the ceremony were Zulkifli, who now heads the Sarawak Contingent Management Department, and the new Sibu Deputy District Police Chief, Supt Balamurugan Govindan.

According to Zainal, Sibu is among three districts in Sarawak led by an officer with the rank of Assistant Commissioner besides Kuching and Miri, thus reflecting the strategic importance of the district in terms of security.

“Although the new leadership has taken over, I am confident that with the extensive experience he has, including having previously handled a gangsterism-related unit at the Bukit Aman level, he will be able to continue the excellence of the Sibu District Police Headquarters (IPD),” he said.

He also stressed that the leadership changes that are currently taking place are part of a normal process in the team following the retirement of senior officers and promotions to fill vacant positions.

He said that the prevailing peace in Sarawak allows the people to enjoy a more orderly and harmonious life compared to areas facing conflict, thus directly impacting the economy and wellbeing of the community.

“Without peace, development cannot be implemented properly. That is why the role of the police force in enforcing the law firmly but prudently is very important,” he said.

Meanwhile, he also emphasised the important role of the Police Wives Welfare Association (PERKEP) as the backbone of support for the families of Royal Malaysia Police personnel, especially in strengthening the relationship between police families and the community.

He hoped that all Sibu IPD personnel would give their full cooperation to the new leadership to ensure that the quality of service delivery to the community continues to be improved.

Zainal also expressed his appreciation to the organising committee for the smooth running of the event and took the opportunity to wish Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri while commemorating the 219th Police Day celebration.

The event reflects the continuity of the tradition of leadership in the police force since its establishment, which will continue to be maintained to ensure that the safety and security of the community is always guaranteed.
