KUCHING: The Mobile Integrated Radio and Internet Communication System (PRIME) was launched in Cyberjaya on Monday (June 16) to enhance preparedness in facing disaster and emergency situations in public areas.
Launched by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil as a strategic initiative of the Ministry of Communications through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), PRIME is a vehicle-based mobile integrated communication system equipped with satellite, cellular, two-way radio, Wi-Fi, and drone technology.
In a statement MCMC said this system functions as interim communication support, enabling effective rescue operations, aid management, and information dissemination.
It operates in collaboration with relevant agencies, including in remote areas or places with disrupted coverage, in line with PRIME’s slogan: “Connectivity Without Limits.”
“PRIME is capable of ensuring stable, flexible, and reliable communication connectivity during relief operations, especially when existing terrestrial network coverage is disrupted or limited.
“The implementation of PRIME will also strengthen collaboration between MCMC and various strategic agencies in disaster and emergency management, thereby improving the country’s response efficiency and communication resilience,” it said.
Additionally, PRIME will support community outreach programmes such as the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) by serving as a mobile digital hub that enables Internet services to be showcased and community activities to be conducted directly at target locations.
This initiative will contribute to the development of a more inclusive and responsive communication ecosystem and act as a catalyst for the community’s digital transformation, in line with the Malaysia MADANI aspiration.
For a start, three PRIME units will be developed in stages.
The first unit launched on Monday will be stationed at the MCMC headquarters to support operations in Peninsular Malaysia, while the other two units will be completed by the end of 2025 and stationed at MCMC offices in Sabah and Sarawak.
Also present were the Secretary-General of the Ministry Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, and MCMC Executive Chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din.
