KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng has called on media practitioners to prioritise their health, highlighting the link between wellness and sharp, effective journalism.

Speaking at the Breaking News Run 2025 held at the MBKS grounds this morning (July 20), Wee commended the media community for coming together for the first time in such a physically engaging event.

“I’m really happy to see that this is the first time journalists are coming together for a run,” he said.

“This is very important because you are the people whose weapon is your words — you can change the world.”

He noted that media personnel often overlook their own well-being due to the demands of their work and encouraged them to make time for exercise — not just for physical health, but also for mental clarity.

“You want a clear mind and a healthy body so that you can keep reporting good things for the people. After exercise, you get better sleep.

“When you rest well, your brain performs better, your blood flows better, and you’re in a better mood,” he added.

He added that a positive mindset contributes to better journalism.

“When you’re in a better mood, you report even better.”

He also touched on the wider message of the event — that a progressive city needs a healthy population to thrive.

“Thank you for supporting the event and showing the world that a smart city needs healthy people.

“Give yourselves a round of applause — you’ve shown that this city wants to move forward with both smart ideas and good health,” he said.

Some 600 participants gathered for the Breaking News Run 2025.

The event was jointly organised by the Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA) Sarawak Branch and the Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA), and was flagged off by Wee, CJA president Alice Wee, KDJA president Ronnie Teo, and HSL MarCom lead Abraham Tiong.
