LAWAS: Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) has issued a stern warning to all contractors, emphasising the importance of consulting the utility provider before commencing excavation works to prevent safety risks and potential legal repercussions.

According to Sarawak Energy’s regional manager for the Northern Region Mohammad Saiful Misi today, this advisory comes in the wake of a recent incident involving damaged cables that led to power disruptions in several areas here.

“The incident, which occurred on March 28, was caused by a public contractor conducting excavation work along Jalan Lawas-Damit.

“The damage to three underground cables disrupted power supply to New Lawas Centre, Taman Kaya Indah, Limpaki, Long Tuma, Natad Musu, Tang Itong, Pa Kepulu, and surrounding areas.

“The severity of the damage necessitated the replacement of the cables, with additional manpower deployed from Limbang to expedite repair works.

Saiful expressed disappointment over the contractor’s negligence and warned of impending action against the responsible party.

“We have repeatedly engaged with third-party contractors to stress the importance of identifying underground cables before commencing excavation. It is disheartening that our warnings have been disregarded,” he said.

In addition to warning letters, Sarawak Energy emphasised that contractors responsible for damaging facilities will be liable for the associated costs. Legal action is being considered in this instance to underscore the seriousness of the matter.

Contractors are reminded to monitor worksites closely and consult with Sarawak Energy before initiating any activities to prevent damage to cables and ensure the safety of workers and the public.

“Working in proximity to our facilities poses significant risks due to live electricity. We urge everyone to prioritise safety and comply with these requirements to prevent injuries or loss of life,” he added.
