KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has launched an investigation into the fun ride mishap at the Kuching Festival Fair 2025, with Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng assuring the public that safety remains the council’s top priority.

The incident occurred on Saturday (Aug 2) at 9.40 pm, leaving three individuals with minor injuries. They were promptly treated on-site by the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC).

Wee said he shared the shock and sadness felt by the community, stressing that the matter is being taken very seriously.

“On behalf of MBKS, I wish to express our deepest concern and heartfelt apologies to those affected and their families.

“Our community’s safety is, and has always been, our top priority. Immediately after the incident, we took swift action by instructing the contractor to close the entire fun ride area and we have sought Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) to reinspect the machines and the overall safety at amusement site.

“It will remain closed until the DOSH has thoroughly inspected and officially certified all rides to be safe,” he said this in his recent statement.

The mayor explained that before the fair opened, MBKS had already enforced strict safety protocols, requiring amusement operators to secure DOSH clearance and valid public liability insurance.

“But even with these steps in place, this incident still happened, and for that, we are truly sorry. We will not compromise when it comes to safety, and any further action needed will be taken with full responsibility,” he said.

Wee also announced that refunds for Tagada and Ferris Wheel tickets will be available directly from the contractor between Aug 4 and 6, from 5pm to 9pm, at the amusement site ticket counter.

He urged the public not to spread unverified information or speculate about the incident.

“Let’s not add fear or confusion during this time. We ask for your patience and trust as we manage this matter with full transparency and care,” he appealed.

Wee acknowledged that the mishap had cast a shadow over the Kuching Festival, which he described as a celebration of community, family, and joy.

“I am personally committed to ensuring that we learn from this and do everything necessary to restore public confidence. Thank you for your understanding, support, and continued faith in MBKS,” he said.
