KUCHING: The Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions has pledged continued support for the Sarawak government while calling on young talents and overseas professionals to contribute to the state’s transformation.
Its president Datuk Seri Richard Wee said the federation will maintain close engagement with the government and work alongside all ethnic communities for Sarawak’s long-term development.
“We represent the voice of the Chinese community, consolidate resources, promote rational dialogue and build consensus in our multicultural society.
“While striving for our rightful interests, we must also work hand in hand with all ethnic communities to build Sarawak as our shared home,” he said at the federation’s 2026 Chinese New Year gala dinner held here on Sunday (Mar 1).
The event was graced by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, representing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Wee thanked the Sarawak government for recognising the federation’s role and for its openness to constructive dialogue through memoranda and proposals submitted annually.
He noted that under the Premier’s leadership, Sarawak continues to implement its autonomy under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) while driving economic transformation through the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), which includes infrastructure expansion, digitalisation, renewable energy initiatives and strengthened social welfare measures.
He highlighted Sarawak’s recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and the introduction of free tertiary education at state-owned institutions, with additional living allowances for students from low-income families.
Wee also thanked the Premier for allocating land and pledging a matching grant for the construction of the Federation of Chinese Associations of Sarawak’s new headquarters, describing it as recognition of the Chinese community’s contributions to nation-building.
On the legal dispute between the Sarawak government and PETRONAS over the state’s natural resources, Wee expressed the federation’s “firm and unequivocal support” for the state government’s position.
“We make no apologies in calling upon all segments of society to stand united with the Sarawak government in steadfastly defending the rights accorded to Sarawak under MA63,” he said.
He encouraged graduates of Chinese independent schools to consider joining the civil service and urged Sarawakian professionals working overseas in technology, medicine, engineering and other fields to return home.
“Sarawak today stands at a critical stage of transformation; therefore, we need the participation and dedication of all professionals and talents back home. Let us stand shoulder to shoulder in fulfilling the noble mission of building a prosperous and progressive Sarawak,” he said.
Wee added that the federation will continue promoting cross-cultural exchange and leveraging new technologies to engage the younger generation and ensure its objectives are carried forward.
