SIBU: A new voice in the local public speaking community is redefining what it means to grow as a communicator and leader.

According to Progressive Toastmasters Club (PTC) Charter President, Sean Wong, their club is positioning itself as a forward-thinking platform that blends traditional speech development with innovation, mentorship, and global relevance.

“Unlike conventional clubs that focus primarily on structured speechcraft, PTC adopts a more dynamic philosophy,” he said during the PTC’s 1st Educational Meeting held at a hotel here recently.

Wong, a Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) member, added that the club places equal emphasis on leadership development, encouraging members to experiment with new meeting formats, utilise digital tools, and explore contemporary topics.

“We’re not just about speaking well. We want our members to speak with relevance and lead with adaptability in a fast-changing world.

“One of the club’s defining features is its role as a bridge between local talent and global opportunities.

“Operating in English, the club attracts individuals seeking to enhance their professional communication skills for international environments, including those working in multinational companies or pursuing education abroad,” said Wong.

He stressed that, at the same time, the club remains firmly rooted in the local community.

“We want professionals in Sibu to gain global-ready skills without having to leave home.

“Central to the club’s culture is a strong emphasis on mentorship and intentional growth. Each new member is paired with a mentor from the outset, ensuring guidance through their early speeches and leadership experiences.

“The club also prioritises constructive feedback, training members to deliver evaluations that are specific, actionable, and encouraging.

“We don’t believe in leaving members to figure things out on their own. We walk alongside them every step of the way,” he explained.

As a founder-led initiative, PTC benefits from a clear and deliberate vision.

According to Wong, every aspect of the club, from its structure to its meeting agendas, is carefully designed to foster a safe, supportive, yet challenging environment where members can accelerate their personal and professional development.

While sharing the core principles of other Toastmasters clubs, he pointed out that the PTC distinguishes itself through its modern, leadership-driven approach, its commitment to mentorship, and its focus on purposeful growth,” he added.

He also stressed that their club is here not to compete with other clubs.

“We’re here to complement them. For those who want to think progressively and lead boldly, we offer something truly unique.

“With its innovative outlook and strong community focus, PTC is poised to become a valuable addition to Sibu’s growing network of professional development platforms,” he emphasised.

PTC is a newly-founded club and is the third club in the area in which English is spoken.

PTC’s mission is to build confidence to speak with impact, and develop leadership communication skills, Wong said, adding that the club strongly encourages foreigners to join as well.
