KUCHING: The Sarawak Human Development Association (PPIS), together with the Lions Club of Kuching Ixora and Lions Club of Kuching Unity, has launched Project BrightStart to bring equal opportunities and a brighter future to kindergarten children in Tabuan Melayu.

The event, held at the Darus Saadah Mosque, saw the distribution of special kits for 42 children aged four to six – 22 children from Tabika Perpaduan Tabuan Melayu Kemboja and 20 from Tabika Perpaduan Tabuan Lot Bunga Raya.

Each child received a kit containing school stationery, a lunchbox, and a drinking bottle – small but essential items to support their learning journey.

PPIS president and Lions Club chartered president Manjeet Kaur Sidhu said the initiative was about giving every child the same opportunity to start well in life.

“In Project BrightStart, every child is treated equally, whether from a privileged background or from families facing financial or personal challenges.

Children from Tabika Perpaduan Tabuan Melayu Kemboja and Tabika Perpaduan Tabuan Lot pose with their new school kits under Project BrightStart, together with PPIS and Lions Club members in Kuching.

“Each one receives the same gift of care, joy, and opportunity. Because every child deserves a bright start in life.”

Manjeet added that during an earlier visit, she noticed old and unsafe chairs at the kindergartens, prompting the team to also donate chairs, solar-powered lights, instant noodles, and even a dishwasher alongside the children’s kits.

The items were officially handed over to Tabuan Lama village head KK Asrol Bujang Lapok, who received them on behalf of the kindergartens.

Furthermore, PPIS and its partners rolled out another initiative, Lighting the Path to Safer, Stronger Communities, by distributing 10 Philips solar floodlights to Kampung Tabuan Melayu.

The solar lights, valued at RM3,500, were sponsored by Mutiara Jayateknik Engineering Sdn Bhd, the authorised distributor of Philips under Signify Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

The project was made possible through the efforts of club director Alexander Koh, who first carried out a site visit on Aug 5, with president Tan Chai Hoon (Lions Club of Kuching Ixora), Manjeet and treasurer Jennifer Atok (Lions Club of Kuching Unity).

The initiative, aligned with Lions Clubs International’s global focus on environment and humanitarian causes, aims to improve safety and quality of life for the community, particularly children walking home after evening activities.
