SERIAN: The proposal to establish a Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) Serian Divisional Office has been raised to strengthen sports development in the area.
Bukit Semuja assemblyman, John Ilus, said that Serian has strong potential in sports and is actively producing athletes and competitive teams in various sporting events at both state and national levels.
“For football, for example, Serian FA once reached the national final of the Liga Bola Sepak Rakyat (LBR) in the 2016/2017 season.
“In 2025, Serian FA also advanced to the semi-finals of the Sarawak Premier Football League,” he said when officiating the Appreciation Night for the Bukit Semuja Constituency contingent in conjunction with participation in the Prima Cup (Football) 2026 and the SABERKAS President’s Cup (Futsal) 2026 at the Berambeh Centre Ranchan on Friday (May 15).
He added that apart from football and futsal, several other sports such as boxing, sepak takraw, pickleball, basketball and table tennis are also gaining encouraging support among the local community.
He also expressed hope that the Sarawak Government would consider establishing a KBS Serian Divisional Office to ensure sports development and facility management can be implemented in a more systematic and effective manner.
“With this office in place, I am confident that the development of sports and the management of existing facilities can be further strengthened in a more structured way,” he said.
At the same event, John Ilus also expressed his appreciation to the Bukit Semuja constituency contingent for their commitment and achievements in the tournaments they participated in.
He also congratulated the Bukit Semuja Branch SABERKAS Futsal Team, which emerged champions of the SABERKAS President’s Cup Futsal Championship 2026 recently.
The event also featured a presentation of appreciation to players and the contingent management team.
