KUCHING: Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Malaysia has announced plans to build the fifth Ronald McDonald House in Malaysia near Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), with construction expected to be completed by 2026.

At a Back-to-School Pack Handover Ceremony held at Wisma SABATI here yesterday (Feb 27), RMHC Malaysia general manager Nasri Nordin estimated the new Ronald McDonald House in Kuching to be RM1 million and will serve as a crucial support centre for families travelling from rural areas for their children’s medical treatment.

“The purpose of building this house is to provide comfortable temporary accommodation for families who travel from far away to accompany their children receiving medical treatment at the hospital,” said Nasri.

“With community support, we are confident that we can successfully establish the fifth Ronald McDonald House in Malaysia, providing hope and assistance to even more families.”

To support the construction of the new Ronald McDonald House here, RMHC Malaysia is partnering with Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) to organise a Charity Run in August 2025. The event aims to raise RM1 million, with corporate sponsors and individuals encouraged to contribute.

During the Back-to-School Pack Handover Ceremony, RMHC Malaysia also distributed school bags filled with school supplies to 400 Primary One students who were former Tabika KEMAS preschoolers. The initiative is funded by zakat (charitable donations) collected by McDonald’s Malaysia.

The contribution was presented by the president of Sarawak Tenaga Amal Isteri-Isteri (SABATI), Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang.

During the event, SABATI announced a contribution of RM20,000 towards the construction of the Ronald McDonald House.

Distinguished guests present at the event were SABATI deputy president Datuk Enn Ong Siok Ean, Sarawak Women’s MAKSAK chairperson Baduyah Bujang, and Kuching North mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman.
