KUCHING: The proposed modern abattoir project in Serembu is expected to adopt advanced technology from China to enhance meat processing standards and ensure strict biosecurity control.

Serembu assemblyman Datuk Miro Simuh said the RM30million project will feature a modern processing plant equipped with a very tight biosecurity system to safeguard livestock health and maintain high hygiene standards.

He said the use of modern technology would help streamline the slaughtering and processing procedures while ensuring the operations comply with international food safety standards.

“The proposed abattoir will utilise technology from China which is known for its efficiency and modern processing systems,” he said.

According to Miro, the project will include a comprehensive processing facility designed to handle livestock in a controlled and hygienic environment, from slaughtering to packaging.

He added that the plant will be equipped with strict biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of diseases and to ensure that the meat products are safe for consumption.

He said the abattoir, once completed and ready, will be managed by a private company.

“We have got the investor from China. I have seen their technology in China and they will bring the technology here once the infrastructure is ready or completed.

“Everything will be fabricated in China, and will be fixed and installed by themselves here upon arrival,” he said.

Miro, however, said it will take time to see this project materialise because they need approval from the relevant authorities.

He said the modern abattoir project is one of the many multi-million projects that he had identified and proposed for implementation under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA).

“I can’t tell exactly when we can start. At the moment, I consider we are still in a planning year. If everything goes well, we may start it towards the end of this year.

“Hopefully this project will not be rejected again. My abattoir proposals have been rejected twice before, first in Paku and then in Siniawan. Now, is the third one…hopefully this time will be okay,” he said.

Miro explained that the modern facility would also improve the efficiency of meat supply in the region and help support the growth of the livestock industry in Serembu and surrounding areas.

“This project will not only modernise the livestock industry but also strengthen the local supply chain for meat products,” he said.

The proposed abattoir forms part of ongoing efforts to modernise the agriculture and livestock sectors in Sarawak while ensuring that biosecurity standards are maintained to prevent animal diseases.
