KUCHING: The Sarawak Sepak Takraw Association (PSS) is set to bring the PEKEMA Cup Sepak Takraw Championship to Miri from June 4 to 7, with 32 teams expected to battle it out in the third edition of the tournament.
PSS Secretary-General, Fudin Chee Kifli, said the four-day championship is part of the association’s continued efforts to strengthen the development of sepak takraw in Sarawak.
“The tournament will be limited to 32 teams and offers a total prize pool of RM10,500,” he said.
The champions will take home RM5,000 in cash, along with the challenge trophy, a subsidiary trophy and medals.
The runners-up will receive RM2,500, as well as a trophy and medals, while the two losing semi-finalists will each earn RM1,500, a trophy and medals as joint third-place finishers.
Fudin said entries are now open and teams or clubs are encouraged to take part in the competition.
“For further details, interested teams can contact me at 019-8889978, Amat Teni at 010-8151567 or Jaffary Idris at 013-8159844,” he said at a press conference held at the Association of Malay Vehicle Importers and Traders of Malaysia (PEKEMA) office today (Apr 23).
He added that the organisers are also looking to attract participation from outside Sarawak, including teams from Sabah, the Federal Territory of Labuan, and neighbouring Brunei Darussalam.
“What makes this tournament interesting is that participating teams or clubs are allowed to recruit players from West Malaysia, provided they are not national players,” he said.
During the event, the challenge trophy was officially handed over by PEKEMA Sarawak’s Honorary Secretary, Polycarp Joseph Garston.
Also present were PSS President, Datuk Ismail Abang Saufi, and members of the executive committees from both organisations.
