KUCHING: The suggestion to re-impose the movement control order (MCO) has received mixed views from members of the public.

The increasing number of Covid-19 cases has caused concern among Sarawakians who are worried that the situation is capable of getting out of control.

New Sarawak Tribune spoke to members of the public pertaining to the matter and many raised their concerns.

Most are concerned that if the MCO was to be re-imposed, it will greatly affect the livelihood of the people as well as the state’s economy.

Some even suggested that the state government continue with the current conditional MCO (CMCO) and impose MCO in certain areas with a higher rate of infections.

Steve Chung, Administrator

I think that Sarawak should continue with targeted restriction order as it is a more feasible option. If MCO is to be implemented, it would affect businesses, causes people to lose their jobs and will greatly impact our economy.

Karuna Sho Hei Pohim, Journalist

I agree with re-implementing the MCO because the daily infection cases are still three-digit numbers. It will be hard to control the situation without strict enforcement. In the past, the restriction order successfully lowered the number of cases. I think the government should consider the safety and health of the people.

Jonathan Jip, Private sector worker

MCO should only be implemented in red zones as it will be easier to control the spread of the virus in these areas. If it was to be implemented across the state, the livelihood of the people and the economy will be affected.

Sangit Haphiah Perit, Retiree

It is better to re-impose the MCO as the situation is getting worse. People must take it seriously and should go out only when it is necessary. Everyone has to be responsible and take care of themselves and others too.

Akmal Aiman Selamat, Student

I think MCO should be implemented because people are getting complacent. By now, everyone should already know what to do such as wear face masks, use hand sanitisers, social distance and not going out unless necessary.

Amryzal Bedul, Private sector worker

If the vaccines are distributed according to schedule and we are able to create herd immunity among high-risk people, I think MCO should not be implemented in Sarawak. The focus is the safety of those with serious health problems. At the moment, the CMCO is enough. Then again, it is up to the behaviour and responsibility of the people.
